The categories of membership which are of direct concern to the general public are detailed below. Throughout this website these categories, skills and services are represented by special Icons so that you might better identify which skills are offered by each member. These Icons are as follows:
The Saddlersâ€™ Round Knife indicates the presence of a Master Saddler. The letter indicates that they will take commissions for the manufacture of new Bridlework (B), Saddles (S) or Harness (H)
The shop image indicates a member who operates from Retail Premises which meet the size and professional service required by the society
The saddle image indicates a member who supplies saddles
The coach and horse indicates a member who is a Master Harness Maker who can make any item of harness
The image showing the horse in movement (purple background) indicates that the member is or provides the services of a resident SMS Qualified Saddle Fitter
The â€˜SSâ€™ logo is an indication of a member who is skilled in the manufacture or maintenance of Side Saddles
The image of the horse in a bridle indicates a member who is a Master Bridle Maker who specialises in bespoke bridle-work and has won prizes at a National level.

Categories of membership
Master Saddler (Retail)
Those businesses which are retailers of saddlery, horse clothing and other requisites for horse and rider and who are approved by the Society. They will employ knowledgeable staff and have a fully qualified Master Saddler on site to carry out repairs and undertake new work. In most circumstances the Master Saddler will also be the proprietor of the business.
Master Saddler (Trade)
Those business which manufacture saddles in the UK and who employ master saddlers within their workshops.
Master Saddlers are trained, skilled and qualified in their own right to make and repair saddlery. They will have a minimum of 7 years experience in the trade. Master Saddlers do not necessarily have retail premises.
Master Harness Maker
Master Saddlers specialising in harness.
Master Bridle Maker
A Master who specialises in bespoke bridlework.
Master Saddle Maker
A Master Saddler who specialises in making saddles
Qualified Saddler and Qualified Harness Maker
These are individuals who are trained, skilled and qualified in their own right to make and repair saddlery and harness according to their category of membership, but do not necessarily have retail premises. They will have a minimum of 4 years in the trade.
Those businesses which are retailers of saddlery, horse clothing and other requisites for horse and rider and who are approved by the Society. They will employ knowledgeable staff and offer a proper repair service for items of saddlery, but this will not necessarily be carried out on the premises.
Qualified Saddle Fitter
SMS qualified saddle fitters will hold the Society saddle fitting qualification, will have a minimum of three yearâ€™s experience and will either be a member in their own right or will be employed by a member.
Master Saddle Fitter
SMS master saddle fitters will hold the Society saddle fitting qualification, will have a minimum of seven yearâ€™s experience and will either be a member in their own right or will be employed by a member. They will also either be a Master Saddler or hold the Society's Flocking & Flocking adjustment qualification and will have provided references from both customers and fellow saddle fitters.

Organisations which have an interest in the saddlery trade and the Society.
Individuals who hold intermediate saddlery qualifications and who are working towards their advanced levels.
Individuals working towards saddlery or saddlery fitting qualifications.
